SENSITIZATION ON CHOLERA AND MONKEY POX

The public health team of Hope Interactive organized a sensitization on Cholera outbreak, Monkey pox and hygiene promotion practices in Buni Yadi of Gujba Local Government.

The event took place at the local government secretariat and had 20 participants in attendance along with the partners from the office who anchored the event. It was a training of trainers (ToT) where the facilitator of the sensitization talked about the cause of cholera and Monkey pox, and how people easily contract it.

Cholera is a disease of the intestine caused by the bacterium, Vibrio cholerae. It is contracted easily by ingesting contaminated water or food. (i.e. contaminated by the bacterium). It causes acute watery diarrhea, AWD, with or without vomiting. It can also be contracted through contact with contaminated fomites (Objects or materials which are likely to carry infection such as clothes, utensils, door handles, staircase rails etc)

It is a medical issue that occurs usually in the rainy season when dirty, stagnant water become far more abundant than in the dry season. It also occurs in IDP camps and in places where hygiene is not taken seriously and where people come in contact with fecal matters most times as a result of open defecation.

The condition can be prevented by maintaining very good hygiene practices and ensuring that a food item contaminated by human or animal waste is not consumed.

IN SECOND PHASE CHOLERA SENSITIZATION BUNI YADI

The health and WASH team of Hope Interactive organized a second sensitization on Cholera outbreak, Monkey pox and hygiene promotion practices in Buni Yadi of Gujba Local Government.

The event took place at the local government secretariat and had 20 participants in attendance along with other staff from the office who anchored the event.

      Outcomes/Results:

The sensitization helped the participants learn so much about Cholera, Monkeypox and hygiene practices. A couple of the beneficiaries before the sensitization only heard about the diseases through hearsay and cultural beliefs. They benefited a lot and asked questions to buttress their understanding of what they have learnt. After the meeting, the participants enthusiastically went out to carry out a sensitization in their various communities and help people to know about cholera and monkey pox which are serious health threats in this region of the state.

The supporting pictures on the sensitization that was done by the participants who now form a group known as the “Hygiene promoters” are shown above.
